Er schleicht durch die Nacht und begeht einen Mordversuch. Ist er (Mitte) der unheimliche Serienmörder, der umgeht in der kleinen Stadt Holstenwall? Nein, denn als er verhaftet und in Ketten gelegt wird, schlägt der wirkliche Täter wieder zu und greift die schlafende Jane an. Neuere Filmographien identifizieren den Darsteller dieses grimmigen Trittbrettfahrers als Ludwig Rex (1888-1979). Früher wurde oft der Name des Schauspielers Rudolph Klein-Rogge (1885-1955) genannt, Thea von Harbous damaligem Ehemann und Fritz Langs späterem Mabuse, Etzel und Rotwang, mit dem der CALIGARI-Darsteller tatsächlich eine erstaunliche Ähnlichkeit hat.
